Commencement 2020 is quickly approaching! If you're graduating this spring (or will be walking in this year's ceremony), here are some of the key things you should know.
The Top Things You Need to Know About Commencement 2020
Location, Date, and Time
The Champlain College Online graduation ceremony will begin promptly at 3:00pm on Saturday, May 9, 2020.
This year's commencement ceremony will take place at the Champlain Valley Exposition, in the Robert E. Miller Expo Centre. This is located at 105 Pearl Street, Essex Junction, VT 05452 (approximately six miles from the Champlain campus).
Students must arrive by 2:15 for check-in and line-up in the Blue Ribbon Pavilion (attached to the expo centre). If you have not checked in by 2:30, your name will not be announced during the ceremony. Please note that there is no rehearsal; instructions will be provided before the ceremony.
Doors will open for guests at 2:00pm.
Maps of both the Champlain Valley Expo and the Champlain College campus can be found here.
Champlain College Online Mix and Mingle
We invite you to join fellow graduates, their friends and families, and Champlain College Online faculty and staff a the pre-commencement Mix and Mingle. This is an opportunity for you to put names and faces and celebrate with your classmates!
This year's Mix and Mingle will be held on campus at 3:00pm on Friday, May 8th in the Champlain Room, third floor of the CCM Building (located at 375 Maple Street, Burlington, VT 05401).
Applying for Graduation
We will contact all eligible May 2020 graduates about applying for graduation during the Spring semester. Students will be asked to:
- Complete a brief form in WebAdvisor for diploma and commencement program information
- Check and update their mailing address
Students will also be asked to complete a separate form to record attendance information and order regalia.
If you have questions about applying for graduation, please contact Tara Arneson in the Registrar's Office at firstname.lastname@example.org.
This location allows for open seating. Champlain College Online and Masters graduates do not need to indicate how many guests will be attending Commencement.
There is ample parking available at the Champlain Valley Expo. If assistance is needed, golf carts will be available to get you or your guests from your car to the entrance.
There will be shuttle service to and from the Champlain College campus in downtown Burlington, for those who require transportation to the Champlain Valley Expo. Shuttle stops will be on the Center for Creative Media (CCM) promenade on campus, and in front of the Blue Ribbon Pavilion at the Expo. Shuttles will be operating every 30 minutes from 7:30am to 6:00pm.
The Robert E. Miller Expo Centre is fully accessible. Our staff will direct guests with special needs to a designated section of the Expo Centre, and can assist you if needed. We ask that you plan to arrive early, and for one additional family member to sit in the designated section, as well.
If you are a graduating student who has accessibility needs, please email email@example.com.
Following the commencement ceremony, there will be a gathering for graduates, guests, and faculty in Expo North at the Champlain Valley Expo.
Family and friends who are unable to attend the graduation ceremony in person will be able to watch the ceremony via the Champlain College website. The link for the stream will go live on Commencement Day.
Personal Items and Pets
We ask that graduating students not bring items such as purses or backpacks, as there is no secure place to keep them. We encourage you to leave personal items in your vehicle.
Absolutely no pets, besides properly identified service animals, are permitted at the ceremonies or post-ceremony gatherings. We appreciate your cooperation.
A professional photographer from Grad Images will be at the commencement ceremony. Information and proofs will be mailed to you directly from the company, so you can purchase what you like. You are under no obligation to purchase photographs. After the ceremony, you may order online from the Grad Images website or by calling 800.424.3686.
We want to keep in touch with you! Remember to keep your address (both mail and email) up to date. Prior to commencement, you can update your contact information by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org; after May 9th, send any contact information updates to email@example.com.
Online Undergraduate Students
Students who have completed all of their degree requirements will receive their diplomas and have appropriate academic honors announced at the commencement ceremony.
In addition, bachelor's degree students who are within seven credits of meeting degree requirements, and associate's degree students who are within four credits, may participate in the ceremony as long as they have at least a 2.0 GPA. These non-graduating participants will receive their diplomas and be awarded academic honors only upon successful completion of their remaining academic requirements.
Academic honors will not be given to non-graduating participants because these awards are based on students' cumulative grade point averages at the conclusion of their academic programs.
Online Graduate Students
Master's students are eligible to participate as non-graduating participants if they meet the following conditions:
- Are within one course of meeting all requirements
- Have a CGPA of 3.0 or higher
Please note that whereas both graduates and non-graduating participants are listed by name and hometown in the graduation program, non-graduating participants are ineligible to receive their diploma or have their name listed in local media until they have successfully completed their remaining academic requirements.
