Wellbeing Wednesday: Supporting The Whole Student

Supporting our students throughout their academic journeys is our top priority at Champlain College Online. Our experienced team is dedicated to helping, guiding, and inspiring our online students to achieve their personal and professional goals. 

But often, the need for support extends past the world of academics - especially when the world presents us with challenges like a global pandemic. At Champlain, we consider it our duty to foster healthy wellbeing habits among our students during these challenging times and beyond. 

When COVID-19 began to affect our students early this spring, we wanted to ensure we were supplying the resources and support they needed to juggle the new dynamics of their changing lives and our changing world. 

From this desire, Wellbeing Wednesdays, a webinar series that presents a variety of wellbeing-focused topics to our current students, was launched.

The goal of these sessions is to provide students with practical ways to care for themselves and others, as well as specific tools and resources to use in everyday life. Ultimately, our aim is to get them in the habit of getting their needs met, even if it's the small step of learning about and considering doing so. Champlain College faculty and staff facilitate the sessions, using their respective areas of expertise to create new and compelling content for students. 

Assistant Provost Johnna Herrick-Phelps says, "It was important to us to not only provide a resource for our students, but also create a space for them to take one hour per week and focus on their own wellbeing, whatever shape that takes for the individual. That focus then spells over into all aspects of their lives - academics, work, home life, and more." 

Past topics of Wellbeing Wednesdays include:

  • Creativity For All: Discover what may be getting in the way of releasing your creativity and what can motivate you to tap into it.
  • Thriving in a Digital World: Techniques and strategies from setting up your workspace for success, and the importance of healthy life choices like diet, exercise, and sleep.
  • Addressing Equity and Social Justice From the Inside Out: How to apply behavioral neuroscience to understand and begin to navigate important cultural conversations we face as a nation and a globe
  • Emotional Navigation: Explore the science of emotions and how to leverage this knowledge so you can exercise more choice, rather than just reacting to the events in your life.

Since the inception of Wellbeing Wednesdays, we've received a tremendous amount of positive feedback from students and faculty alike. As the changing of seasons gets underway, we're thrilled that our community is armed with techniques to adapt, create new opportunities, and make time and space for themselves.
