A simple homework question from his son became the catalyst for Cong's educational journey. Despite his extensive technical background across five countries, Cong realized he needed to strengthen his understanding of the American education system and overcome his communication challenges.
Through Champlain College Online (CCO), Cong developed the confidence to transform from someone hesitant to speak up to a professional ready to lead teams in software engineering and AI integration. His story demonstrates how education can bridge both knowledge and cultural gaps, creating pathways to new professional opportunities.

Before Champlain College Online
What was life like for you before enrolling at CCO?
Cong N.: When I first landed in the United States, I had big dreams of pursuing higher education. However, life had other plans for me, and supporting my family became my primary focus. I found myself working hard to make ends meet.
Fortunately, my previous working experience in other countries like London, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Germany, along with my professional certifications in cybersecurity and advanced credentials from Microsoft across multiple domains, helped me secure a job that laid the foundation for my future career.
Before enrolling at CCCO, I spent my free time after work enjoying activities with my family. I love playing with my kids and teaching them about emerging technologies like AI (Artificial Intelligence) agents and Copilot tools. We often play video games together and enjoy spending time outdoors at parks, rivers, and mountains, taking in the beauty through photography and biking.
What motivated you to go back to school or pursue your degree?
C.N.: A significant moment in my life occurred when my son asked for my help with a school assignment. His question seemed simple at first, but it made me realize that I needed to gain a deeper understanding of the U.S. education system in order to assist him effectively.
This realization also reignited my dream of pursuing higher education. Motivated by this insight, I enrolled in a CCO program to further my education.
Were there any specific challenges or circumstances you were facing at the time?
C.N.: One of my biggest challenges was communicating because I didn’t feel confident. I was often scared to share my ideas and ask questions in big groups.
What made CCO the right choice for you? How did you find us?
C.N.: CCO is one of the schools recommended by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Initially, I considered several schools due to their affordable tuition and quality.
However, my communication with the Champlain Admissions team was exceptional, which led me to choose CCO. I truly appreciate the Admissions team's assistance and smooth enrollment process.
Additionally, the onboarding process was also executed effectively. I received my email account and gained access to all systems very quickly.

What was it like adjusting to online learning and balancing school with everything else in your life?
C.N.: Adjusting to online learning was a significant change for me. Initially, it was challenging to manage my time effectively and balance school with my work and family responsibilities.
However, I gradually developed a routine that helped me stay organized and focused. I learned to prioritize tasks, set realistic goals, and make the most of my time.
The flexibility of online learning allowed me to study at my own pace and fit my coursework around my other commitments. Over time, I became more comfortable with the online format and appreciated its convenience.
Were there any standout classes, instructors, or moments during your program that really shaped your experience?
C.N.: Yes, there were several standout moments during my program at CCO. One of the most impactful classes was the first course on digital forensics science taught by Mr. Sergio Magalhaes.
The instructor was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. Additionally, his constructive feedback was extremely valuable for me in all my other classes. It improved my learning skills, and it stood out in all my courses.
It boosted my confidence and motivated me to continue striving for excellence.
What surprised you the most about your journey at CCO?

Can you share a moment when you realized you were growing or changing—personally or professionally?
C.N.: One moment that stands out was when I presented and spoke during a project kickoff meeting with about fifteen senior staff members.
Initially, I was nervous and unsure of my abilities, but as the presentation progressed, I realized it was going well. I could see that I was gradually growing from what I had learned from the CCO.
I gained confidence and learned how to communicate effectively and motivate everyone in my work environment. This experience made me realize that I was developing both personally and professionally.
What would you say to someone who's thinking about going back to school but is still unsure?
