Valecia’s journey into higher education began with an unexpected twist. After pursuing a career in healthcare as an X-ray technician, she quickly realized that it wasn’t her passion. She shifted to marketing, where she thrived for several years. But her curiosity led her to the startup world, where she managed a customer service team at an IoT company. It was here that Valecia first encountered the field of cybersecurity.
"I started a whole fraud prevention program from scratch," Valecia recalls. "I had no experience in that realm, but in a startup, you wear many hats. They gave me the freedom to create solutions, which was a turning point in my career."

When Valecia’s startup struggled, she knew it was time for a change. After years of self-teaching and career pivots, she decided to pursue a degree in digital forensics and, later, a master's in Information Security at Champlain College Online.

I wanted to show my daughter that you can be a mom, have a career, and still achieve your goals."

Today, Valecia works as a Senior Cybersecurity Engineer on the CIS Critical Security Controls team at the Center for Internet Security (CIS), developing international cybersecurity best practices. Her career evolution is a testament to the flexibility and quality of Champlain’s program, which prepared her for leadership roles in cybersecurity.
