Transfer Credit Evaluation Team
PO Box 670, Burlington, Vermont 05402
We're committed to getting our students to completion faster and more affordably than they believed possible. Expect more opportunity to demonstrate your prior knowledge at Champlain.
Prospective students often wonder how they can get the most transfer credits possible for their prior academic and work experiences. Our transfer credit evaluation team works hard to ensure you get the transfer credits you deserve, and graduate from Champlain College Online as quickly and affordably as possible.
You may also be eligible to earn course eqivalency credits for your prior learning in addition to college credits, which can considerably reduce the time it takes to get to degree completion. Our evaluation process looks at all your previous experience, college and life, and we work with you to make sure you get the credit you deserve.
A transfer credit evaluation is performed on an individual basis after an application is submitted and our operations team has confirmed that it is complete, with “official” transcripts from all higher education institutions attended, and an applicant is accepted into one of our academic programs.
Before an accepted applicant receives an offer of admission from Champlain College Online, our transfer credit evaluation team will identify the program requirements that have been fulfilled, on a course-by-course basis, based upon the student’s official, documented prior learning. They will also highlight the courses that will be required in order to fulfill the program requirements. All of this will be included in a single form that will be sent to the newly admitted student via email.
Our evaluation process also considers additional opportunities for earning potential transfer credits. Examples of additional opportunities include, but are not limited to CLEP; alternative credit providers, such as Study.com or Sophia; and completing an individual learning portfolio.
Students also have the potential to earn undergraduate transfer credits after enrollment - no matter how far along they are in their program. If you’ve acquired an industry certification, or completed documented training that has been validated by ACE or NCCRS during the course of your academic program, we can evaluate it to see if it might be eligible for additional transfer credit.
Transfer Credit Policy: Undergraduate Programs
A student who transfers from another college may be awarded transfer credits up to one-fourth of the total credit hours toward a certificate, up to 45 credit hours toward an associate degree, and up to 90 credit hours toward a bachelor’s degree.
Credits from institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) may be eligible for transfer based on course equivalency of content and learning outcomes, or, in the case of General Education, based on the extent to which the transferring course aligns with the corresponding Champlain College Competencies.
Students in bachelor’s degree programs must complete 15 hours of 300-level or higher courses in the major. Judgments of transfer course equivalency are based on criteria provided by the appropriate academic division, and judgements are made at the College’s discretion.
When necessary, transferring students may be asked to provide course descriptions, course outcomes, and syllabi to assist in the evaluation of credit. Transfer course equivalency must be at the same academic level. For instance, graduate level credit will not be applied in transfer toward undergraduate programs.
Credit hours for transferred courses are given full value, but grades are not transferred to a student’s permanent Champlain College record and do not become part of a student’s cumulative grade point average at Champlain College. In order to be considered for transfer credit, a course must be completed with a grade of “C” or higher in accordance with the Champlain College grading scale.
Due to rapid advancements in certain fields of study, credit for courses taken prior to the catalog year the student is matriculating to may need to be re-taken, at the Program Director’s discretion.
All transfer applicants are required to submit official transcripts of their high school and college records. The acceptance of transfer credits is at the sole discretion of Champlain College.
Transfer Credit Policy: Master's Degree Programs
Transfer credits from accredited institutions of higher education are accepted based on equivalency of course content and learning outcomes to meet degree requirements. The grade must be “B” (3.0) or better.
Graduate level transfer is awarded on a strictly limited basis; credits awarded for experiential or non-collegiate learning may not exceed 25% for credentials between 12 and 30 credits
When necessary, students may be requested to provide course descriptions, course outcomes, and syllabi to assist in the evaluation of credit. Judgment of transfer course equivalency is based on criteria provided by the appropriate academic division, and judgments are made at the College’s discretion.
Credit hours for transferred courses are given full value, but grades are not transferred to a student’s Champlain College permanent record and do not become part of a student’s cumulative grade point average (CGPA) at Champlain College.
Due to rapid advancements in certain fields of study, credit for courses taken prior to the catalog year the student is matriculating to may need to be re-taken, at the Program Director’s discretion.
