Expedited Admissions: A Pathway to Completion

One year into our Expedited Admissions initiative, we could not be happier - or prouder - of our students. Since Fall 2019, more than 50 Champlain College Online graduates have continued on from an online associate or bachelor’s degree into online bachelor’s or graduate programs, respectively.

You may be wondering what the Expedited Admissions initiative (“expedited admissions” for short) is and how to take advantage of it. Before we do that, however, we want to describe what inspired it. And, we’ll give you a small hint: our adult students.

How Expedited Admissions Came To Be

When Assistant Provost Johnna Herrick-Phelps joined Champlain College Online, she asked how we could make the pathway from one credential into another easier for our students who had achieved exceptional results in our programs. One year later, a process was established and our expedited admissions was launched.

One of the resounding themes that came out of conversations with our prospective online undergraduate students (the vast majority of whom do not hold an associate degree) is that their end goal was frequently not the first credential on the academic ladder. Instead, many applicants to bachelor’s programs tell us their plan is to secure a master’s degree within the next couple of years.

Our theory is that for these students, a higher education is something they’ve put off due to life circumstances like having a family, helping to support their household, military deployments, and the like. And, when they’ve finally decided it’s the right time, they’re going for it - all of it! They’re not going to stop until they’ve earned the highest credential possible, and show the world what they’re made of.

Eligibility

All students with a GPA of 3.5 or higher are eligible to indicate their desire to start the next corresponding credential (i.e., program in their current or related field of study) without having to complete a full application or even answer a single essay question!

Upon graduation, eligible students receive an email alerting them of the opportunity, and include the academic programs they can enter without applying for admission. We provide a link to a form where they indicate their interest, and they typically receive a follow up call or email within 24 hours. Shortly thereafter, their offer of admission is sent, and after indicating they are ready to start, their advisor reaches out to discuss their classes.

Top online bachelor’s programs that Champlain’s associate degree graduates enter include the BS in Business Management and BS in Accounting. The most popular online graduate programs for Champlain’s bachelor’s degree graduates are MBA, MS in Digital Forensic Science, and MS in Information Security.

Expedited admissions is just one example of how we strive to make going back to school easier for adult students who are juggling so much, and who desire to make a better life for themselves and their families.
